Nature - 2025 Autumn equinox

Autumn equinox

September 22 was the autumn equinox again this year. There’s not much new for me to say about what it represents. On this day, Earth's axis is tilted side-on to the sun, resulting in almost equal hours of day time and night time worldwide.

Today the seasons change - from summer to autumn in the Northern Hemisphere and from winter to spring in the Southern Hemisphere. The hours of darkness from this day gradually increase north of the equator until the solstice on December, and vice versa south of the equator.

As usual, I’m using this article as an excuse to show pictures of what I was up to around the day.

An old, abandoned shieling above the flood plain of the River Dee. These were dry-stone simple buildings and enclosures used to feed cattle in the summer pastures

Shortly after taking this picture of SurPug, my trusted steed, it’s chain snapped. The spare links I carry were the wrong size and I pushed it back for 3.5 miles
